Tenor
New Jersey native James Caran has been praised for his captivating stage presence, engaging emotional sincerity, and beautiful vocal timbre. After graduating from the Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatory in Saint Petersburg, Russia, James debuted at the Mariinsky Theater's Stars of the White Nights Festival as the Narrator in L. Bernstein's Candide. Other concerts and stage productions have taken James to the Grand Hall of the St. Petersburg Philharmonia, the Auditorio Nacional de Música in Madrid, Slovak National Radio concert studio, Kaliningrad Philharmonia, Saratov State Opera, St. Petersburg's Shalyapin Theater, and State Kremlin Palace. Russian audiences laud James for his "Russian soul" and "flawless pronunciation," and the director of the Moscow House of Romance (a form of art song) called James, "the chief interpreter of Alexander Vertinsky's music" and "the American ambassador of the Russian Romance."
As a voice-over artist and studio singer, James has collaborated with Petersburg Animation Studio since 2017, recording nearly 100 children's songs. Along the way, he translated and adapted the lyrics of over 53 songs of the early-education cartoon BabyRiki into English from the original Russian – preserving the original melody, rhyme schemes, rhythms, and line-by-line meaning of each song. Since 2020, Caran has also curated film dialogue and subtitles for feature films.
A laureate of multiple international competitions, in September 2023 James won 3rd prize at the 23rd Great Tenors Tournament, hosted by Opera at the Castle in Szczecin, Poland. In March 2025, James debuted at the Budapest National Theater's Jelenlét Festival, performing the role of Andriy in Mykolas Arkas's opera Katerina in collaboration with the Society of Ukrainian Culture Society in Hungary. Ukrainians at the festival premiere raved that "the only sign that James isn't Ukrainian is his name."
